Located in the Southern Queensland region of Australia, Southern Downs is a vast expanse of land that stretches from the mountainous western border to the New South Wales border in the east. The region is known for its fertile agricultural lands, scenic beauty, and rich history that dates back over thousands of years.

The traditional owners of the land that makes up Southern Downs are the Indigenous people of the region, the Githabul, Jukambea, and the Yuggera. These indigenous groups have inhabited the area for thousands of years and have left behind a rich legacy of cultural traditions and customs that are still evident today.

The first recorded European visitors to Southern Downs were the members of the expedition led by Allan Cunningham, a botanist and explorer, in 1827. He was followed a few years later by Surveyor-General Thomas Mitchell who named the region 'Cunningham's Gap' after the earlier explorer.

In the 1840s, the first European settlers arrived in the region, primarily attracted by the fertile soils and vast grasslands. These settlers quickly established large agricultural properties, and the region became a hub for farming and ranching activities.

As the 19th century progressed, Southern Downs became an active center of commerce and trade. A flurry of mining activity began in the region, and towns such as Stanthorpe and Warwick became vital centers for the industry. The discovery of gold in the 1870s fuelled this mining boom, which continued into the early 20th century and brought thousands of immigrants to the area.

The region continued to grow and develop throughout the 20th century, with the establishment of industries such as dairy, timber, and cotton. Southern Downs also played an active role in both World War I and II, with many of the region's young men and women serving in the armed forces.

Today, Southern Downs is a thriving region known for its scenic beauty, rich agricultural lands, and cultural diversity. The region's history is still evident today in its many heritage sites and museums that offer visitors a glimpse into the past. Some of the popular tourist attractions in the region include the Warwick Historical Society Museum, which showcases the area's history, and the Stanthorpe Heritage Museum, which offers insights into the region's mining past.

Overall, Southern Downs is a region with a rich and diverse history, one that stretches back over thousands of years. Each period in its history has helped shape the region into what it is today, a vibrant and dynamic center of commerce, agriculture, and cultural exchange.
